K-Sim® Engine Instructor

A new generation Monitoring, Assessment and Configuration system.

Developed in close cooperation with experienced instructors worldwide, The Norwegian Maritime Directorate, and Det Norske Veritas (DNV), the K-Sim Engine Instructor system offers a complete, intuitive and user friendly control of student exercises, which is unsurpassed in user-friendliness and efficiency.

POWERFUL AND USER-FRIENDLY

K-Sim Engine Instructor enables the instructor to develop customises exercise modules for individuals, teams or a combination of both from any PC running the application, with fully controllable areas, such as: The instructor can configure the system to support individual student training mode, team training mode, or a combination of modes. The instructor can connect to any of the student stations to monitor, assess and control student performance.

INTUITIVE EXERCISE DEVELOPMENT TOOL

The new instructor system allows the instructor to develop a complete exercise module from any PC running the application; from the simulator classroom, Instructor’s office or home. When completed, the instructor simply sends the exercise to the instructor station or loads it from a memory stick.

Each exercise module may comprise of the following:

  • Initial condition
  • Triggers
  • Actions
  • E-Coach messages
  • Student station configuration
  • Assessment

EACH EXERCISE MODULE MAY COMPRISE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Initial condition
  • Triggers
  • Actions
  • E-Coach messages
  • Student station configuration
  • Assessment

INITIAL CONDITION

An initial condition describes all the variables at start of the exercise; typically designating conditions such as “Full Ahead At Sea”, “Manoeuvring” or “Gas Free Condition”.

TRIGGERS BY USING BOOLEAN GRAPHIC BLOCKS

A trigger is a combination of events that initiates an Action, e-Coach message, or is used as input during assessment. Any of the up to 6,000 accessible variables and malfunctions can be utilized to activate triggers.

ACTIONS, COMPREHENSIVE CHOICE OF PARAMETERS

An action is derived from input variables and malfunctions which can be initiated or pre-programmed as part of the exercise. Example of an action is “Sea Water Controller Failure” or change in “Ambient Air Temperature”. The Instructor defines how each Action or Malfunction will affect the simulation, through a Step Function, Pulse, Pulse Train, Sinusoidal shaped function or according to a randomly selected function. The above listed features are also prepared for Ramping. All Actions can be implemented as part of the complete exercise.

In addition to pre-programmed exercises, the Instructor can at any time introduce Actions to any student station or group of students. Deployment of Action to a student

E-COACH MESSAGEs

Build-in student performance feedback system The E-Coach is an electronic mentoring tool used to provide the Student with information and guidance based on a single event or combination of events. Students receive the E-Coach messages as a result of their performance of assigned tasks. Messages may contain information such as positive reinforcement, suggestions, errors and warnings. The use of Triggers and E-Coach makes the simulator a truly intelligent system, able to load and advise students throughout the exercise the instructor present.

In addition to programmed E-Coach messages, the Instructor can “instant message” to any student station or group of students. Instant E-Coach message initiated by Instructor Powerful tool allows configuration of any Student Station The Instructor can easily configure each Student Station to define what information shall be accessible and visible to the Student. This defines which subsystems apply to each Student Station, as well as indicators that should be visible and accessible. The complete configuration is done once and the configuration is stored as part of the exercise.

ASSESSMENT OF ALL PARAMETERS AVAILABLE

Through the new Instructor and Assessment System, the Instructor has access to a unique tool that allows the assessment of students on all levels, from support to management. The assessment system allows the Instructor to monitor, and use for assessment, not only alarms, but any of the 6,000 available variables in the simulation models. The instructor can give credits or penalty points depending on student’s performance.
