KONGSBERG’s cargo and ballast handling simulators, K-Sim Cargo and K-Sim Ballast, enable high quality training in every aspect of complex load and discharge operations, from single sub systems to the overall running of the operation.
Specifically developed for the maritime and offshore industry, the simulated vessel models are certified by DNV and exceeds the existing IMO/STCW requirements.
Compared to conventional training, simulators offer a more structured method of building high levels of competence. During simulation training, one can isolate and freeze each sub system to understand and acquire knowledge. One can perform critical operations repeatedly to acquire skills, and test and develop attitudes by training in situations that demand complex decision making.
Proper simulator training is an effective way to build crew competence, and provide confidence and relevant experience. Simulators can maximize performance and lead to enhanced operational safety and efficiency.
Through the use of physical models, real time simulation models are completely integrated to produce a ‘domino effect’ on adjacent subsystems. Faults and alarms will have cascading effects throughout the system if not acknowledged properly. In addition to an extremely high level of realism, the K Sim Cargo and K-Sim Ballast simulators offer user-friendliness and flexibility, key features for providing high levels of instructor control and greater variety of course offerings – capabilities demanded by shipowners and training institutes worldwide.
Let your students and crew understand and operate the entire cargo- and ballast-handling system in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.

IMO 2.06 Oil Tanker Cargo and Ballast Handling Simulator
The K-Sim Cargo models are extremely flexible. To fit your exact requirements, the simulators can be configured for a desktop computer or an operational full mission simulator using custom panels and ship equipment for the ultimate familiarization.
All K-Sim Cargo models can be delivered as cloud-based training solutions through the K-Sim Connect portal. This is a online/eLearning solution compliant with DNV’s Class D certification. It enables students to carry out simulation training anytime and anywhere.
The desktop solution fulfills DNV’s Class C requirements and is ideal for basic cargo handling training in a class room set up. The system typically includes 1-25 student stations and 1-2 instructor stations to create and manage the simulation exercise.
The full mission system is compliant with DNV’s Class A certification and offers a physical familiarity with the real shipboard environment. This solution includes an instructor station, a cargo control room and a deck area. A CCTV system can be included, and some models can be delivered with a 3D BigView system and KONGSBERG’s K-Load Dry Cargo Load Calculator.
We tailor our K-Sim Cargo simulators to your training facility’s specific needs. The cargo control room may for instance be represented by any combination of interactive mimic panels, operational panels and consoles. As your training needs change, you can always upgrade or expand the system.
The architecture is extremely flexible and can be used across a range of different interfaces. K-Sim Cargo models can for example be integrated with KONGSBERG’s K-Chief automation system, which provides a new level of realism since the student and crew can practice on equipment identical to what they later will operate on ships.
With complete, intuitive, and user-friendly control of student exercises, your instructors can develop customized exercises for individuals and teams. The automatic recording of all activity during exercises, a replay function for debriefing, and a built-in assessment system, make structured training and objective student evaluation easier than ever.
Co-located with our K-Sim Cargo simulator, the K-Sim Ballast, 2-DOF simulator and related five part task desktop simulators have been in operation since 1994 and have served CMS well. The installed mathematical model of the semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) forms part of our offshore training. With instructor control and full remote monitoring of the simulator, the system covers all ballast control room training requirements for our customers.
All K-Sim simulator systems and models within Class A, B and C are certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) according to the current standard DNV-ST-0033 Maritime simulator systems.
